ECONOMIC INFO |
| The Town of Lac du Bonnet is situated
91 kilometres north-east of Winnipeg on the west bank of a portion of the
historic and picturesque Winnipeg River. It is the heart of the Rural
Municipality of Lac du Bonnet and remained under its umbrella from 1922
until December 31, 1947, when the documents of incorporation were signed.
The name Lac du Bonnet was given to the area on October 1, 1900 by Walter
Wardrop, Sr., entrepreneur when the post office came into existence and
he became its first postmaster. He called the new post office Lac du Bonnet,
a name he took from the "big lake" some five miles downstream from the
area. Through the years, land has been annexed to make the Town the area
it is today. The now defunct sawmill and brick works have been taken over by water ski facilities. The building of McArthur Falls power station resulted in the rise of water levels along river banks of the Lac du Bonnet area. The reshaped shoreline has added a new dimension to the always exciting Winnipeg River. Paved pathways through our parks and along the river downtown are a special feature to visit with a cairn erected to the first airmail to fly out of Canada in 1927. Service Clubs such as The Legion and its Auxiliary, the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Boy Scouts, as well as, the Chamber of Commerce and the Pioneer Club play a large part in the entire area. |
Baseball has
given way to fastball and slo-pitch, while a closed in arena provides ice
for skating, hockey and ringette. At the 1st of July cele- brations, you
can find cotton candy, rides, bingo, dancing and the best fireworks in a
rural region. The fireworks are set off on the town dock and the grandstands
are the river bank. The river itself has a flotilla of boats watching the
performance! Four churches provide services every Sunday and their members are very active in the community. Hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, a clothing store, flower shops, home furnishings, antique shops and craft establish- ments can be found in the Town of Lac du Bonnet. Along the streets in summer, flower baskets hang from the lamp posts and at Christmas, seasonal lighting takes the spotlight. A large craft sale takes place in November after the tree lighting and a party is held for all residents the night before. There are designated
snow trails into Lac du Bonnet and specific areas for snowmobiles to park.
In February, the frozen river is dotted with shelters for the Ice Fishing
Derby. The Town of Lac du Bonnet is a great place to visit and spend some time, enjoy the multiculturalism, and enjoy mother nature at its best. |
