The early 1800's in Northeastern Manitoba was a time of
discovery - a time when explorers were drawn to uncharted territories
inhabited only by aboriginal peoples. French fur traders
discovered an alternate waterway to bypass dangerous rapids at Seven
Sisters on the Winnipeg River. The aborigines called the area
"pinnowak", meaning "calm waters". Today we call this waterway
the Pinawa Channel. The Pinawa Channel was canoed by
the sons of La Verendrye who left the main expedition led
by their father to the south; as did a later explorer, David Thompson,
whose charts first show the Pinawa area.
The Town of Pinawa is a resort-like community that was built in 1963 as a company town for the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited research facility. It has developed into a fully serviced, multicultural community, 104 Kilometres east of Winnipeg. Pinawa offers all the modern conveniences, yet it offers the nature lover and the sports enthusiast a vertable storehouse of activities in its backyard. Pinawa is Canadian Shield country, full of waterways, forests and ancient granite outcrops. Trees, protected during construction, provide an attractive setting for homes, playgrounds, commercial and service buildings. An abundance of tree varieties line eight Km of Winnipeg River shoreline within the town. This parkland is reserved for the enjoyment of all residents and their guests, as well as the local animal population. Hours of enjoyment can be spent participating in your favorite type of recreation, winter or summer. Golfing, tennis, swimming, boating, sailing, fishing, mountain biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are some of the amenities available in Pinawa. Free of traffic and big city tensions, this town offers a unique lifestyle with choices for personal growth for both you and your family. |
