| The Village of St-Pierre-Jolys,
located only 56 Kilometers south of Winnipeg on Provincial Trunk
Highway #59, is a friendly community with a rural atmosphere offering
all the amenities of an urban community.
The history of the community dates back to the turn of the 18th century when a trading post was constructed to trade with the Cree and Assiniboine Indians. The Voyageurs paddled along the Rat River which flows into the Red River linking Fort Garry to St. Paul, Minnesota. The community is named after the patron Saint Peter, for it was on this day that a group of pioneers had finished clearing land along the Rat River which would be the site of the future parish. The community began as a place where settlers from St. Norbert and St. Vital would bring their horses and cattle to feed in the winter. In 1872 the founding eight families came to settle permanently in St-Pierre. The name "Jolys" was added nearly one hundred years later as a tribute to the first priest Father J.M. Jolys who had a profound impact on the development of the community when he settled there in 1880. Today this progressive town with a population of more than 70% French Canadian descent, has a rich and diversified cultural and community oriented life. The Village has proclaimed itself bilingual and offers services in both French and English. Its history is preserved at the St- Pierre-Jolys Museum. The growing popularity of the Spring Maple Sugar Festival, the Agricultural Fair & Exhibition held in July and the annual Frog Follies in August are occasions when the community joins with its friends and neighbors to celebrate its joie-de-vivre. This sports minded community keeps
active year round with an arena and fitness centre, a community hall
(capacity 289 people), a 20 acre municipal park complete with 2 baseball
diamonds and a children's play area. Minor baseball, curling, hockey,
and social clubs are some of the activities available to the residents
of St-Pierre-Jolys. Located in the heart of the business
area, flanking P.T.H. #59 are La Prairie Ltee, several lawyers
with satellite offices, an insurance agency, accountants, plus
several Provincial Government and municipal offices, all
within walking distance to serve your business needs. |
