When completed in August 1931, it housed
the first three of six turbine generators which produced a total
of 75 megawatts. Stage two began in 1948, three years after
World War II had ended. Inevitably, the war had delayed progress
in the province's development, but during that time the demands for
electricity had increased and two more units were installed at Seven
Sisters. In 1952, the sixth and final unit was placed in service.
These additional units doubled the generating station's total
megawatt production.
Elma is located at the junction of Provincial Trunk Highway 15 and Provincial Trunk Highway 11. There are approximately 80 residents within the boundaries of this settlement, with many more residing in the surrounding area. The first settlers came to Elma in the 1880's. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, was built through Elma and was completed between Winnipeg and Elma in 1910. In 1919, the line was taken over by the Canadian National Railway.
