Technical Help Line

As our customer base grows, our technical help-line becomes busier. In order to provide the best service possible, we'd like to ask those of you with problems or questions that do not require immediate attention to use e-mail rather than the tech help-line. This will free up the line for those with more immediate problems, as well as allows us to research your problem thoroughly and respond with full information. The e-mail address to use is granite@granite.mb.ca.

To improve the technical help we offer, we are entering each call into a database. At this time, we are simply monitoring the information, but we have several great ideas for using for that database. If the database were online (without the personal information - of course) imagine how useful it would be to search for problems and their solutions when you have a problem. The database is also a useful tool when you end up dealing with more than one Granite staff member before your problem is solved. The database is even used during planning of Internet Training Sessions.

Love Is In The Air!

The season for love is upon us. Let this Valentine's Day be a special one for that important person in your life. This season's interactive activity for all of you is a literary contest. That's right, we want to see how creative you all are. Just visit link removed to enter your poem, story or whatever for your sweetheart. Carnation Corner Plus, located in Lac du Bonnet Manitoba has kindly agreed to deliver a special prize to the winner's significant other on February 14th. If you're not the creative sort, check out the site and register your vote for the winner. There are already several excellent entries. Don't miss this one. It's the easiest contest we've set up so far. The winner can be anyone, except of course for staff and relatives of Granite Internet. No harm in making this webmistress the recipient of that prize, though :)

The Whiteshell Winter Festival

The Whiteshell Winter Festival , happening in Pinawa, Manitoba this February 28th and March 1st is really spurring a lot of local interest. The Festival Committee, as well as many other spin-off committees, have been so busy organizing this event it would be a shame to miss it. This webmistress is involved with the Entertainment Committee as well as the marketing of the event. Granite is also the corporate sponsor of the Dog Sled Poker Derby taking place. Help us out by planning to visit Pinawa and partaking in all the activities and entertainment we have planned for you. The kids will love Bubbles and Bellini on Sunday morning from 10 to 12 PM. The puppet show planned for Saturday morning will be entertaining and give you all a good tour of the festival sites and events. Enjoy music by The Road Kings all afternoon on Saturday and mellow to the jazz of the Urban Gurillas all afternoon Sunday in our heated tent. If you can tear yourself away from the entertainment you can enjoy ski lessons and a tour courtesy of the Whiteshell Ski Club, enter the whole family in the Glow in the Dark Bonspiel. Visit a craft show or a fashion show, attend several workshops going on throughout the two day festival or even head out for a sleigh or pony ride. Throw your skates and toboggan in the car before you leave.

The Pinawa Business Council is sponsoring an Ice Sculpture Contest during the Whiteshell Winter Festival. Entries are limited, so if your group is interested in participating call Cathy at 753-2277 early to avoid disappointment. Prizes include cash, gift certificates and lots of other great items courtesy of the Pinawa Business Council. Entries are free so put on your creative toque and come out to sculpt away!

Members Forum

There have been requests from some members to allow CGI scripting to be run in the members user area. For those of you that don't even know what that is, that is the ability to run programs, called by web pages, on our server. CGI scripts are typically written in one of several programming languages. Common languages are Perl, C or Java. CGI stands for common gateway interface. These programs or scripts are necessary to run guestbooks, formmail, search engines, message centres etc. Granite will not be allowing these programs to run in user areas now, nor will we likely allow them in the future. The reason is security. Programs can be written, intentionally or unintentionally, that could create problems outside of the members own user area.

Coming soon to the HTML Help Page will be a list of CGI scripts, along with the documentation for using them . These scripts will be available for use by Granite members only. We sincerely hope this will satisfy the needs of those designing their own web pages. If there is a script you need, feel free to contact us and we will see what we can do. There are scripts available on other sites for use as well. Some Granite members are already using other scripts. If you use one you like, we'd love to hear about it. Send us the URL for the script and we'll post it on the HTML help page for other members to use.

If you update your homepage with something you'd like to share, please e-mail the webmistress and we'll post the address here.

Network Manager’s Report

Problems
A major outage occurred on Saturday January 24, 1998. MTS had a major hardware problem that ended up taking out a DS3 card, which ended up taking down 26 T1 circuits. Down time in Lac du Bonnet was about 2 hours but Pinawa was down until 7:00 AM Sunday January 25, 1998.

The first modem in Whitemouth failed on Wednesday January 28, 1998. It was replaced about 6:30 PM that evening.

Upgrades
No major hardware or software upgrades. A minor change to the mail system prohibits the sending or receiving of messages over 2 Mb. It is recommended that anyone needing to transfer a file over 1 Mb use FTP instead of email. Check our FAQ page if you need help using FTP.

New Features
Granite is a reseller for WiLAN products. WiLAN builds high speed wireless modems up to 3.0 Mb per second speeds (T1 x 2). Granite currently uses 56 kb per second wireless modem technology.

February Upgrades/Changes
The modem pool in Lac du Bonnet has started to see busy signals. More equipment has been ordered and Granite will be adding more lines and modems the second week of February.

Granite is looking into ways of relieving the congestion on the Pinawa link ( link is shared by Agassiz School Division, Eastman Freenet, Granite (Whitemouth), and the School District of Whiteshell). This would increase the performance for all users of Pinawa link.

Network "FUN FACT"!
In January, Granite transferred about 20,500 email message which produced 267,000,000,000 bytes of data.
