We have some real treats for you this month in the Granite Newsletter. New additions include Tech Talk by our resident guru Kevin Rattai. Kevin is the one of the people you might reach when you call our technical help-line. If you'd like to make suggestions to him for his next article, or just say hello to our newest member, e-mail him at krattai@granite.mb.ca. John Scott, a local writer is another new addition you're sure to enjoy. John has submitted his first short article for publication this month and we hope to see a lot more of his work in the future.
Hello, folks! Looks like this ol' jack of all trades is adding another trade. So, here I am writing snippets for the newsletter, glad to meet you. I'll be writing articles about tech in general and our own tech here at Granite.
!WINDOWS 3.x TECH ALERT! There have been some recent downloads and
installations of MS Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 3.x! In two
Granite Internet Services members' computers, this new installation has
modified their Granite connection preventing them from logging into
Granite. After many hours of tech support, un-installs and re-installs,
these two computers are still unable to log in. Resolutions are still
pending. Remember folks: There is always a risk when downloading and
installing software from the internet. Regardless the trustworthiness
of the source.
Here at the front desk, I get to talk to you folks who call in for tech support, whilst being bombarded from three directions by Computerized Radiation. Better than a microwave, re-heats in 2.25 minutes. Right now, only IBM compatibles, one with Windows 3.1, the other two with Windows 95. Hope to get a mac soon, to better support you folks out there, without doing it all from memory. So, as I said, good to be here, nice to meet you all, and see you all next month.

Now let me get this straight. Manitoba is a prairie province. Right? At least that's what everyone tells us.
Now here's an exercise for you. Pull out a map of Manitoba - I mean a map that shows
the entire povince and look at it closely.
First of all it looks out of proportion. Only maybe 1/8th (at the most) of the province is what I would call prairie. In fact, Manitoba has as much tundra and coastline as it does prairie. Maybe we should replace the bison as our long-standing symbol and adopt the polar bear or beluga whale to represent us - after all we are one of the maritime provinces. Anyway that's just me blowing off a little bit of steam. The point is that Manitoba is fortunate in possessing all the major characteristics of Canada. Both in its inhabitants and in the landscape. Most of our province, as is a good portion of Canada, is made up of Canadian Shield country. It bonds this country like no other ingredient. Whether you live in Yellowknife, Uranium City, Lac du Bonnet, Timmins or Val D'or you are in shield country - positively the most beautiful country in the world.
The Irish lament how they miss the green hills of the emerald isle and for me I always miss the granite shorelines and jack pine, spruce and Tamarack of "the shield".
Stuffed Pickerel
One of the things Manitoba is famous for is our wide variety of fishing habitats. From Hudson Bay to one of our 100,000 lakes to our numerous rivers and streams we can consider ourselves quite fortunate. Here's a recipe "stolen" from August ‘97 Fish'N Boat as provided by Amici Restaurant in Winnipeg.
Stuffed Pickerel (Walleye)
Ingredients:
˝ Zucchini
1 small Carrot
˝ Leek (white part only)
3 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
salt
pepper
4 Pickerel Filets, 10 oz. total
1/4 cup dry White Wine
˝ bunch Basil
8 sprigs Italian Parsley
1 cup Alfalfa Sprouts
3 ripe Tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped
Thinly slice the Zucchini, Carrot and Leek. Sauté in 1 teaspoon of the Olive Oil until crisp-tender, and season with Salt and Pepper. Cool the vegetables. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Distribute the vegetables evenly over the Pickerel Filets, roll into tight bundles, and drizzle with 1 teaspoon of the remaining Olive Oil and Wine. Bake 10 minutes. Meanwhile, make an Herb Sauce by blending the Basil, Parsley, remaining Olive Oil , and salt, until smooth. Spoon half of the Herb Sauce on two serving plates, and place two Pickerel Bundles on the sauce. Garnish with the Sprouts and Tomatoes.
This recipe serves two - unless your guest has been out in the bush looking for that elusive moose...in which case you at least double the recipe.

A woman called the Canon help desk with a problem with her printer. The tech asked her if she was "running it under Windows." The woman then responded, "No, my desk is next to the door. But that is a good point. The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window, and his is working fine."
Tech Support: "How much free space do you have on your hard drive?"
Customer: "Well, my wife likes to get up there on that Internet, and
she
downloaded ten hours of free space. Is that enough?"
Overheard in a computer shop:
Customer: "I'd like a mouse pad, please."
Salesperson: "Certainly sir, we've got a large selection."
Customer: "But will they be compatible with my computer?"
I once received a fax with a note on the bottom to fax the document back to the sender when I was finished with it, because he needed to keep it.
Customer: "Can you copy the Internet for me on this diskette?"
I work for a local ISP. Frequently we receive phone calls that go something like this: Customer: "Hi. Is this the Internet?"
Some people pay for their on-line services with checks made payable to "The Internet."
Customer: "So that'll get me connected to the Internet, right?"
Tech Support: "Yeah."
Customer: "And that's the latest version of the Internet, right?"
Tech Support: "Uhh...uh...uh...yeah."
Tech Support: "All right...now double-click on the File Manager icon."
Customer: "That's why I hate this Windows -- because of the icons --
I'm a Protestant, and I don't believe in icons."
Tech Support: "Well, that's just an industry term sir. I don't believe
it was meant to --
Customer: "I don't care about any 'Industry
Terms'. I don't believe in icons."
Tech Support: "Well...why don't you click
on the 'little picture of a file cabinet'..is 'little picture' ok?
Customer: [click]
Customer: "My computer crashed!"
Tech Support: "It crashed?"
Customer: "Yeah, it won't let me play my game."
Tech Support: "All right, hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot."
Customer: "No, it didn't crash -- it crashed."
Tech Support: "Huh?"
Customer: "I crashed my game. That's what I
said before. Now itdoesn't work."
Turned out, the user was playing Lunar Lander and crashed hisspaceship.
Tech Support: "Click on 'File,' then 'New Game.'"
Customer: [pause] "Wow! How'd you learn how to do that?"

Network Manager’s Report
Problems
INTERNET - Some problems were reported by MBnet this month. Two attacks
to Manitoba sites caused poor performance. Bell Canada did some maintenance on
their fiber optics lines and switches on September 26 and 27, 1998.
LAC DU BONNET - MTS performed some maintenance on their Frame Relay circuits in early September. Only two modems have had their firmware upgraded to the latest revision. All modems will be upgraded when the newer firmware is released (see Whitemouth).
WHITEMOUTH - All the modems have had their firmware upgraded to the latest revision to fix a problem with V.90 modems. A bug was found in the firmware that caused a problem with USR 14400 modems. The supplier is working on a fix.
